BAXTER SPRINGS - Baxter Springs came up on the bottom end of an overtime heartbreaker to St.Mary’s-Colgan of Pittsburg in the closing seconds, 54-53, last Friday on the Panther's homecoming night. The game had the usual Lions-Panther twist and turns, and the fans yelling from both sides of the court. The Lions are now 10-5 for the season.
The Lions were down 8-6 after the first quarter on senior Garrett Shafer’s starting plus-1, Brant Trease’s drive up the middle, and Preston Landis’ free throw.
Colgan scored first in the second period. Shafer completed another plus-1, the Panthers Simon Higginbotham scored, and Baxter’s Trey White scored for a Panther 14-11 advantage. Higginbotham scored again, and Landis underneath brought the game to 16-13. With one minute left in the half, Landis got the rebound, turned the ball to Trease, and Trease went long to Kaid Karnes to score. Karnes finished the half with a free throw for an even 16.
In the third period, Shafer on his slam dunk put the Lions up 18-16. Higginbotham, who finished with 23 points, completed his own plus-1, but White answered back with two free throws. With Shafer’s rebound and full court pass to White, the Lions went up 22-19. The Panther’s Aaron Higginbotham scored. With five minutes left in the quarter White hit a trey. Landis was successful on two free throws for a Lion one point advantage. A. Higginbotham completed a plus-1 to go back on top 47-45. With seven seconds left Shafer missed at close range, pulled his own rebound, and connected to put the game in overtime.
In over-time neither team could score until the 1:15 mark when S. Higginbotham put the Panthers up 49-47. Baxter Springs turned the ball over, and Brown made two free throws. Down by three points, and with 10 seconds left, White shot, fell down, but was good on a 3-pointer and was fouled. On a rare 4-point play with White’s free throw, the Lions went up 53-52. The game should have been over.
Colgan brought the ball to their half court, and called time out. Not wanting to foul, Baxter Springs left Dominic Piccini to drive and score. At the final buzzer the Panther won.
