The first fundraiser for Relay for Life is this weekend at Comanche Middle School.

Every year the American Cancer Society hosts Relay for Life, an event dedicated to raising funds for cancer awareness and research. This year, the 2017 Relay for Life will take place on June 2 at Wright Park, which means it’s time for some fundraising.

The first fundraiser for RFL will be held from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday and 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday at Comanche Middle School. The Comanche Midnight Survivors, a group of middle school students participating in RFL, will be hosting this fundraiser.

“This is the second year that they’ve had a team, and they’re having a garage sale as one of their fundraisers this weekend,” said organizer Marcy Taylor. “Some of these kids have really felt that this is important, maybe they know someone who has cancer, but I think it’s good for the kids to get involved in stuff like this.”

According to Taylor, there will be household items, clothing and plenty other merchandise available at the garage sale. Donations for the garage sale are welcome as well.

“We are going to take items and if people would like to bring stuff to donate I will be there from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday setting up,” she said. “I know that I have several more people who are donating, so hopefully we’ll have lots of good stuff.”

RFL is held for anyone impacted by cancer in any way. Luminaries in honor or memory of a cancer victim will also be available at this fundraiser for those impacted by cancer, according to Taylor.

“So many people’s lives are touched with cancer, whether they’ve had it themselves or they know somebody,” said Taylor. “You can hardly talk to anybody that doesn’t know somebody that’s had cancer, and they’re usually pretty close to them.”

So far this year, five teams have signed up for RFL. This year’s theme is centered on a carnival-type setting.

“At the relay itself, we are planning to have teams set up carnival-type games people can play,” said Taylor. “Then we’ll have entertainment and everyone’s welcome to come to the relay, we’re going to have a lot of things going on that evening.”

Taylor urges anyone who is interested in participating in RFL to attend the next monthly meeting 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Dodge City Senior Center. For more information, contact Taylor at 620-430-4084 or
