DCHS announces new boys basketball coach, DCHS tennis competes in the Maize Invitational, Red Demon baseball and softball pick-up road wins and DC3 men's golf rolls through day 1 of the KJCCC championship.
DCHS boy's basketball
Dodge City High School announced on Monday that Tony Starnes would take over as the head boy's basketball coach pending school board approval. Starnes takes over for Dennis Hamilton who retired at the end of last season after serving as head coach for 30 years at DCHS. Previously, Starnes taught and coached at North Hopkins High School in Texas. Starnes also coach at Clarendon College, a community college in Texas. Starnes coached six teams to the Texas state playoffs and had two teams win the national scoring title while at Clarendon.
"We believe Tony is going to be an outstanding fit for the Red Demon Basketball program," DCHS athletic director Jay Gifford said. "Coach Starnes understands the privilege of being able to build on the legacy left by Coach Hamilton which is an advantage that can lead to immediate buy-in and success."
On Friday, the Red Demons played in a triangle at Hutchison, taking on the host Salthawks and Wichita-Southeast. Dodge City split the two, falling to Hutchinson 5-2 but soundly beating Southeast 16-7. The Red Demons are 6-2 on the season and play in their first conference action on Friday when rival Garden City heads to Red Demon Field for a doubleheader.
The Lady Demon softball team scored a total of 48 runs in their road sweep of Wichita-Heights on Friday. Dodge City won game one 22-2 in six innings while winning game two 26-15. The Lady Demons have won seven-in-a-row after dropping their first game of the season. They will be back in action tonight on the road in a doubleheader versus Great Bend.
DCHS boy's tennis
The Red Demon tennis team was in action on Monday at the Maize Invitational. No. 1 singles player Brett Groth finished in sixth place with a record of 1-2 bringing his season record to 14-2 while no. 2 singles player Josiah Thomas did not place with a record of 0-3 and a season record of 4-6. The no. 1 doubles team consisting of Zachary Ridgeway and Bryce Harman went 1-2 finishing in 7th place with a season record of 6-5 and the no. 2 doubles team made of Collin Clark and Rolando Lopez went 2-1 in the invitational which was good for 5th place and boosted their season record to 8-2.
DC3 men's golf
After the first two rounds of the KJCCC championship, the Conquistador men's golf team is sitting six strokes atop the leaderboard going into today's final round. Sophomore Witchayapat Sinsrang shot a six-under 138 over the 36-holes played on Monday which is good for first overall, freshman Adam Berg-Capin is tied for second and sophomore Thirawat Chantrakantanond and freshman Nick Kagy finished the two rounds tied for 10th.
