When Freddy's Frozen Custard opened its doors in Dodge City in March 2016, a collection box was placed next to the registers like every Freddy's restaurant that came before.

"The veterans box is in every restaurant," Dodge City Freddy's manager Erin Lybarger said. "Customers are able to put in spare change or whatever they want and 100 percent of the money goes to veterans."

On Thursday, the Freddy's in Dodge City donated $500 to the American Legion Post 47. The money came from the veterans box.

"The collection was from since we opened," Lybarger said. "We wanted to get it up to a nice round number before we made our first donation and we chose the American Legion first because they donated to us the large American Flag hanging in the restaurant.

"Next donation we will select another veterans organization to give to."

According to the Freddy's website, the restaurant was founded in 2002 by Bill and Randy Simon.

They named the chain after their father Freddy Simon.

"Freddy and his whole family are veterans," American Legion vice commander Dan Stacy said during the check acceptance. "We donated our flag to the restaurant because they have done a lot for veterans."

On the Freddy's website it states that Freddy grew up on a farm near Colwich, Kansas, and signed up for the infantry in the US Army at the first opportunity.

Freddy served in World War II where he earned a Purple Heart and Bronze Star.

Since that time Freddy makes frequent visits to history classes in high schools and is active in veterans groups and memorial events across the country.

"We participate in several veterans groups such as transporting vets to hospitals," American Legion finance officer Roger Jones said. "We also give back to the veterans at Fort Dodge to give them a little extra to look forward to as well as take them to play bingo once a month.

"This donation will go towards those programs."

Stacy added, "we're always looking for new members and volunteers. We are entirely volunteer-based and could use more help."

The American Legion Post 47 is located at 803 S. 14th Ave. and can be reached at 620-225-3766.
