After being ranked No. 15 in the nation, and picked to finish second in the KJCCC, the Conquistador football team will begin its season today as they host Highland Community College at 6 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.
The Conqs finished the 2016 season with an overall record of 7-4 and a conference record of 4-3, tied for second place with Highland. Dodge City began the 2016 season with a 26-16 loss to Highland on August 27, but rattled off five consecutive wins against Iowa Central, Kansas Wesleyan, Ellsworth, Butler and Independence, before falling to Iowa Western on October 8.
The Conquistadors have played the Scotties 24 times and have a record of 15-9.
Dodge City is led by head coach Gary Thomas who is beginning his fifth season with the Conqs. In his four previous years, Thomas has a record of 25-19, collecting nine wins in 2015 and winning a KJCCC Championship.
"We are definitely excited for the season to start and see the fruits of all of our hard work," Thomas said. "The season will be a grind every week as usual. All of our opponents are well coached, and every team will be loaded with talent. All we can do is concentrate on being the best version of ourselves every day, and try to win the mental aspects of each competition. If we can do that, the wins and losses will take care of themselves."
The game will be streamed live on Youtube, and will also be on the radio with Damon Post on the call at 1550 AM.
Following the game against Highland, the Conqs will be on the road next week as they travel to Iowa Central Community College on Saturday, Sept. 2 at 11 a.m.
