SALINA, Kansas — Following a tie in their first game of the season, the Conquistador men’s soccer team defeated Kansas Wesleyan by a score of 3-0 on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Irvin Rodriguez played a key role in the win, playing a part in all three goals on the day. Rodriguez assisted on the first goal and then scored the final two goals of the game.
In the first half, the Conqs struggled to get things going, but sophomore Abel Chevelon was able to break open the scoring in the 25th minute on an assist from Rodriguez, taking a 1-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Shortly after the second half began, Rodriguez took a free kick and put it in the back of the net, making the score 2-0 in the 51st minute.
Again in the 81st minute, Rodriguez netted another goal, making the score 3-0 and pushing the game out of reach, giving the Conqs their first win of the season.
"The heat was a great factor in the first half," head coach Oscar Zelaya said. "We were still able to score one goal. We came out stronger in the second half, pressuring more and ignoring the heat. This allowed us to score two more goals. The team demonstrated that no matter the weather condition, we have one choice, and that is to give 100 percent on the field."
Dodge City is now 1-0-1 on the season and will be in action again on Monday as they travel to Bethany, Oklahoma, to take on Southwestern Christian University at 3 p.m.
