LAMAR, Colorado — Despite losing two games on the first day of the Quiznos Invitational, the Conquistador volleyball team was able to end the weekend with a 2-2 record, defeating Hesston College, 3-1 by scores of 21-25, 25-23, 25-21 and 25-19. The Conqs took down the host school Lamar Community College, 3-1 by scores of 25-15, 27-25, 26-28 and 25-21.
In game one against Hesston, Dodge City had three players collect double-digit kills. Rachel Slattery and Raquel Valdez both contributed with 12 kills while Jaylen Pegues had 11 kills. Valdez was also able to collect 12 total block on the day, six solo's and six block assists.
Gabby Valdez and Alex Stecklein combined for a total of 40 digs, Valdez collecting 15 while Stecklein had 25. Pegues also was second on the team with 16 digs.
Dodge City took an early 2-0 lead in game two and lead late in the third set. After dropping the third set 28-26, the Conqs battled in the fourth set to take the match, 3-1.
Pegues and Slattery both had double-digit kills again in game two, with Pegues getting 12 kills and Slattery collecting 11. Gabby Valdez had a team-high 28 assists and three service aces while Stecklein led with 28 digs.
"We played much better volleyball today," head coach Kamri Nehls said. "Our passing was on and we were able to control the floor well. We played smart, hard volleyball. I am extremely proud of this team for their effort today."
The Conqs move to 3-2 on the year and will be in action again on Monday, Aug. 28, as they travel to Parsons, Kansas, to take on Labette Community College at 5:30 p.m.
