Red Demons Boys cross country opens season
The Dodge City Red Demons boys cross country team ran in an invitational meet at Lake Afton Park Sept. 2.
The varsity team finished fifth place in a field of 12 teams, with a score of 149 points. They were led by top-10 finisher Javier Marquez, who finished in a time of 17:10. Six other Red Demons finished in the top-50, running under 20-minute times.
The junior-varsity team finished in sixth out of 10 teams, with 154 points. They were led by Angel Landeros, who ran the two-mile course in 12:19, good for 20th place overall. Behind Landeros, four other Red Demons placed in the top-50, all recording times of 13:03 or better in the race.
“I felt this was a good start for a young, inexperienced team,” Red Demons head coach Buc Bolmer said via email. “I am excited to see what they can do over the next two months.”
Red Demons soccer team continues to roll
The Dodge City High School boys soccer team followed up their season-opening 11-1 victory with a 10-0 win over Maize high school, Monday night.
Senior Miguel Baca, the 2016-2017 Gatorade Kansas Boys Soccer Player of the Year, scored his second goal of the season to open the scoring in the first-half.
Fellow-senior Joshua Donjuan, scored two goals against Maize after scoring four in the team’s opener last Tuesday. Donjuan currently leads the team in goals this season, with six.
Second to Donjuan is senior Mario Martinez, who has five goals this season. Three of those game Monday night, including the game-ending 10th goal to secure the win for the Red Demons.
The win moves the Red Demons to 2-0 this season. They have beaten opponents by a combined score of 21-1, including scoring all 21 of those goals consecutively after allowing a first-minute penalty-kick goal in their first game.
Dodge City takes on Wichita North in the semifinals of the Titan Classic at 6 p.m. Thursday.
