Renovations are underway for Jean Russell Park, located at Avenue B and Country Club Drive, with construction starting last week.

The Dodge City parks and recreation began to tear down out-of-date equipment with plans for new installations concluding some time in October.

According to city staff, Jean Russell Park was named in honor of Margaret Jean Russell who was the sister of C.H., J.L. and T.P. Russell who were the leaders of the development company who purchased the land in 1927.

Under the 1927 agreement, the city was to use the property and improve it for park purposes in accordance with a written proposition.

The agreement stated that if the city failed to comply with the conditions of the proposition and acceptance at any time within 5 years, the property would revert to the Russell Heights Company.

"The improvements are part of our annual park maintenance where they upgrade a park every year," city public information officer Jane Longmeyer said. "And Jean Russell was on the list for (updates) this year."
