The Dodge City High School debate team placed second at the Arrowhead Invitational Debate Tournament in Hays on Saturday.
The 2nd place finish marked the first tournament loss for the debate team.
"We had a great day," said debate coach Steve Ray. "All seven teams posted winning records and all seven placed in the top five in their divisions.
"We were 13-2 in the sweepstakes standings and that is usually good enough to win a tournament. Unfortunately, on this day, someone else was even better."
Novice debater Hever Arjon, headlined the team pushing his season record to 10-0 going unbeaten in five rounds in the Arrowhead tournament.
Arjon along with teammate, Sarah Rojas, received top honors in the class for first-year debaters.
Novices Devin Quinonez and Mikaila Carrillo made their competition debut posting a 4-1 mark to earn 3rd place medals.
The team of Amber Nilhas and Daniel Soriano also took 3rd place in the Open Division with a 4-1 mark tying with teammates Josh Habiger and Viridiana Arias who won 4th place by virtue of having one more speaker point in five rounds.
For the second time this year, all four varsity debater won medals at a tournament this season
"I think our kids can be very proud of what they accomplished today," Ray said. "I think a tournament like this just shows how difficult it really is to win a tourney."
Taking 3rd place in the junior varsity division was the team of Guadalupe Hipolito and Amy Soberanes posting 3-2 record and 21 speaker points.
Coming in 4th and 5th place for the JV team were the teams of Caleb Boys and Josh Harshberger and Kerry Garcia and Elijah Jones respectively.
The winner of the tournament went to Buhler who posted a 14-1 record with Garden City coming in 3rd place.
According top Ray, there were nearly 100 debaters from 13 schools that competed in the Arrowhead Invitational.
Next up for the debate team will see split squads travel to Liberal and Sterling.
One team will be competing in the Redskin Invitational with the other competing in the Black Bear Debate Tournament.
