As the Dodge City Red Demons (3-3 overall, 1-1 in-conference) head to Garden City, Kansas for the annual Hatchet Game against the Garden City Buffaloes (5-1 overall, 2-0 in conference).
The two teams enter the game from trending in opposite directions. Two weeks ago, the Buffaloes narrowly escaped Liberal, Kansas with a 28-27 win against the Liberal Redskins. The same night, the Red Demons trounced the Wichita South Titans 61-6.
A week later, both teams played tough games.
In Wichita, Kansas, the Buffaloes jumped out to a 23-6 lead in the first half against the Wichita Northwest Grizzlies. After halftime, however, the Buffaloes allowed allowed 30 consecutive points, losing 36-23.
Meanwhile, in Dodge City, The Red Demons and Hays Indians battled on rain-soaked fields until almost midnight. In the late fourth-quarter, Red Demon sophomore linebacker Tommy Bermudez scooped up a fumble and scored what proved to be the winning touchdown, giving the Red Demons their second-straight win.
Despite the teams’ respective streaks, Red Demons head coach Dave Foster said the Hatchet Game tends to cause the teams to bring in fresh-perspectives. It’s a unique quality in the games, he said.
This season, the two teams have played two common opponents: Hays, and Wichita South. Dodge City beat Wichita South 61-6, while Garden City won their game 46-0. Against Hays, Dodge City won 12-7, while Garden City won 7-3.
“If you’d just look at the two common opponents, you’d say ‘Hmm, it’s gonna be a barnburner,” Foster said. “I’ve done enough of these, with them, to know what this rivalry means.”
The Dodge City Red Demons take on the Garden City Red Demons at 7 p.m. tonight at Buffalo Stadium in Garden City, Kansas.
