The Dodge City Conquistadors women’s soccer team fell to the Hutchinson Blue Dragons 8-0 Wednesday night.
The loss moved the Conquistadors to 9-8-1 overall this season, with one game left to play, against Garden City in Garden City, Kansas Friday night.
That game is scheduled for 5 p.m.
The Blue Dragons dominated most of first half, recording 12 shots on goal in the first half, four of which were on goal. The Conquistadors only managed five shots in the first half, one of which was on goal.
“(In the) first half we were doing good, (in the) second half we just need to stay focused, minor mistakes killed us,” Conquistador head coach Steward Bortey said.
Despite being massively outshot in the first half, the Conquistadors limited the Blue Dragons to just two goals, entering halftime down 2-0. Freshman goalkeeper Courtney Turner had two saves in the first half.
Still, Wednesday night’s game was full of mistakes by the Conquistadors. Hutch did everything right Bortey said, while Dodge City didn’t.
“We let minor mistakes kill us,” Bortey said. “That’s what happened. Tonight, we failed, we failed as a team to do what we were supposed to do.”
In the second half, the Blue Dragons capitalized on those mistakes, scoring three goals in the first 11 minutes of the half. They ended up outshooting the Conquistadors 16-3 in the second half, scoring six goals despite three saves by Turner.
And while the team may be down after the loss, members of the team are sticking together ahead of Friday’s finale.
“We just have to regroup,” Bortey said. “Right now we’re not torn, we’re still a team. It’s nice to see that people are picking each other up, people are seeing what they’re made of. I have people who are stepping up.”
The Conquistadors head to close out their regular season Friday before waiting to see if they make the playoffs.
