COFFEYVILLE, Kan. – On a cold night, the Conquistador football team fell to Coffeyville Community College by a score of 62-28 on Saturday night.
Things got started off quick, as Rodney Murphy picked up the opening kick-off at the Conquistador three yard line and took it 97 yards to put the Conqs up 7-0, just nine seconds into the game.
Coffeyville then took their opening drive down the field, scoring with 10:40 left in the first quarter to tie the game at seven.
After a Dodge City punt, the Red Ravens then drove down the field once more to take a 14-7 lead with just under nine minutes to play in the first quarter.
Dodge City then took their next drive inside the Coffeyville 20, but a an interception gave the ball back to the Red Ravens who then drove down the field to extend their lead to 21-7.
Dodge City then got the ball to the Coffeyville 10 yard line but was stuffed on fourth down to turn the ball over on downs. On the very next play, Jordan Semanat intercepted a pass to give the Conqs great field position. Dodge City got inside the 20, but turned the ball over on downs, giving the ball back to Coffeyville with 12 minutes left in the half.
Coffeyville was able to add a field goal with two minutes left in the half, but another interception gave the ball back to the Red Ravens who were able to punch it in the end zone with 1:22 left in the half, making the score, 31-7.
With two seconds in the half, the Conqs came out to kick a field goal, but after a timeout, the offense took the field and were held short, heading into the half, down 31-7.
To start the second half, the Conqs held the Red Ravens to a punt, then Caden Walters connected with Caleb Mills to cut the lead to 31-14.
In the very next possession, the Red Ravens drove down the field to push their lead back to 24, leading, 38-14.
With 4:20 left in the third quarter, Walters was able to drive the Conquistadors down the field, connecting on another touchdown pass to cut the lead to 38-21.
Coffeyville would not let a comeback happen, taking their very next drive down the field, capped off by a touchdown run to extend the lead back to 45-21.
The Red Ravens then scored another touchdown to extend the lead to 52-21, but Walters then drove the Conqs down and connected with Eugene Minter to cut the lead back to 52-28.
Coffeyville kept pushing, scoring another touchdown with 9:16 left in the game to push the lead back to 59-28.
With 43 seconds left in the game, the Red Ravens score one last time, extending the lead to 62-28.
The Conqs are now 4-6 on the year and will be in action again in two weeks as they host Hutchinson Community College for the final game of the year at 1 p.m.
