As the Spearville Royal Lancers prepare to play the St. Francis Indians tonight,  Lancers head coach Matt Fowler made it clear his team is taking the Indians seriously.

“You get into November and the only teams that are left are the big-time teams, and this is certainly one of them,” Fowler said.

It’ll be a rematch of last season’s sub-state level game between the teams, a game Spearville lost 36-30.

“They were unbelievably athletic,” Fowler said. “They had the whole package last year.”

This year’s team, he said, is not quite the same, and neither are the Lancers, but even after losing a number of talented players on last year’s team due to graduation, he said St. Francis still brings a mixture of size and speed not always found in 8-Man football.

Even being left standing is still something worth enjoying though.

“There are a lot of good teams that didn’t make it into November,” Fowler said.

Like St. Francis, Spearville is one of them. While St. Francis beat WaKeeney-Trego 58-0 last Friday, Spearville was busy taking care of their own game, beating Kinsley 46-0.

That moved the Royal Lancers to 9-0 overall this season, while St. Francis’ moved the Indians to 7-1.

The two take the field against each other tonight at 7 p.m. in the Spearville High School football stadium in Spearville, Kansas.
