The Spearville Royal Lancers beat the St. Francis Indians 42-20 Friday night in the regional-round of the 8-Man DI state playoffs.

They’ll live on to play next Friday, while the Indians' season is over.

The win moved the Lancers to 10-0 this season. They earned it against the team that beat them last year in the sub-state round.

Head coach Matt Fowler said it was good to beat another powerful team.

“That’s a great football team and they have a lot of explosive athletes and it feels to beat a great football team,” Fowler said.

It wasn’t a perfect game for the Lancers, who turned the ball over a couple of times. But in most cases they were able to prevent those errors from coming back to haunt them.

For instance, early in the second half, Spearville fumbled the ball and St. Francis recovered. The defense, however, held St. Francis on fourth down on the subsequent drive to force a turnover on downs. On the very next play after Spearville took over, The Lancers completed a long pass to Carson Rich that gave the Lancers a 28-6 lead.

“I thought our defense played their best game of the year,” Fowler said. “That’s one of the best defensive games we’ve played in a long time. The kids stayed mentally-tough and together and they didn’t get down on themselves when we made mistakes, and that’s something we’ve stressed a lot because it’s gonna happen when you play good teams. You’re gonna have times when things don’t work right. How do you respond to it? And I thought we responded to it very, very well.”
