The Dodge City High School debate team enjoys competing in the Buffalo Invitational Tournament in Garden City.

In the past 4 years, the Demon Debaters have left Garden City with the first place trophy and this year was no exception.

The win also kept the teams top-2 finish streak at nine on the season.

Finishing the day with a 14-1 record, the Demons beat out runner-up Liberal and third place Lyons.

The top two DCHS teams finished undefeated and both claimed first place within their division.

In the Open Division, the team of senior Cisco Soto and junior Alex Rangel went 5-0 while teammates Oyuki Camacho and Amy Soberanes registered a 3-2 mark to place fourth in the varsity division.

The team of Brian Nguyen and Amy Samaniego went undefeated with a 5-0 mark to grab first place in the Novice Division.

Teammates Alondra Valle and Eduardo Villanueva finished in second place with a 4-1 record and the team of Max Ruiz and Vanessa Rivero took sixth place with a 3-2 for first-year competitors.

In a rare scheduling occurrence according to DCHS debate coach Steve Ray, the two losses for Ruiz and Rivero came at the hands of the higher placed team from Dodge City.

"I couldn’t be more proud of the way our team performed in this tournament," he said. "We plug different people in to compete every week, and every week someone steps up and leads us to victory.

"I’m especially proud of the leadership the varsity members have shown.

"They have mentored the novices and taken on an unprecedented amount of responsibility this year. They deserve all the credit for the success we’ve enjoyed this season."

After a week off, the debate will jump back into action this Saturday when they head to Kingman for the Eagle Debate Tournament.
