A Wednesday morning crash claimed the life of 28-year-old Caleb Matthew Douglas of Minneola.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, at 7:30 a.m., Douglas was driving a 2016 Ford Explorer northbound on Highway 283 near mile post 35.

At the same time, a 2008 Dodge Ram 2500 was also northbound and was driven by James Morley Young, also from Minneola.

The KHP report indicated that Douglas attempted to pass Young while a 2006 Freightliner Semi truck was southbound.

As the pass attempt occurred, all three vehicles attempted avoidance maneuvers and caused Douglas to strike the Freightliner head-on.

The vehicle Young was driving was struck by debris from the collision.

The driver of the semi was Sofia Esther Ponce, 57, from El Paso, Texas.

Douglas was pronounced dead at the scene by the Ford County Coroner.

Ponce was injured in the crash and taken to Western Plains Medical Complex to be treated.

Young was not injured from the debris.

The KHP report also said that all three drivers were wearing their seat belts.
