GI Forum for 11 years has made a special donation to the residents of Fort Dodge Soldier's Home.

With the help of sponsors of GI Forum members, community individuals and businesses, GI Forum was able to give a gift to 16 residents at Lincoln Hall on Wednesday.

"This year we were able to give the residents $150 each in gift cards," GI Forum member, Henry Sanchez said. "It was for the Adopt-A-Vet Holiday gift giveaway.

"It is our way of saying thank you to the veterans for their service."

In addition to the gift cards, Martha McQueen and her grandchildren brought in a special door prize that went to four lucky raffle winners.

"My granddaughter Sarah is part of the youth group at the GI Forum," McQueen said. "My husband Jay is a veteran and this is our first year being involved.

"My granddaughter is a sophomore and has some big aspirations with helping veterans."

As the gifts were being delivered, several of the residents gave thanks to GI Forum members and the McQueen grandchildren, Asher, Trace and Jaden, along with Sarah, who helped hand out the gifts.

"It's wonderful," Fort Dodge resident Gary Stowe.

George Anderson added, "We really appreciate this, and cannot thank you enough."

GI Forum Commander Frank Asebedo spoke about how some of the residents have family that live far away and aren't able to visit during the holiday season.

"It's to show them appreciation for their service," Asebedo said. "We received a lot of donations and sponsors this year so we were able to give them more and that is what it's all about, a way to give back to our veterans."
