Boston Cole Boswell, 18, from Dodge City, has been arrested for the alleged shooting death of Shantel Rose Winkler, 27, from Howell.

According to Dodge City Police Chief Drew Francis, on Sunday, March 4, around 10:39 a.m., deputies with the Ford County Sheriff’s Office received information about a possible homicide inside a Dodge City motel.

"Members of the DCPD and Ford County Sheriff’s Office located the motel and discovered the body of a 27 year old female from Howell, with a single gunshot wound to the head," Francis said in a press release. "The male has been arrested for the alleged crime of first degree murder and aggravated robbery."

According to Francis, charges had been filed with the Ford County Attorney’s Office around 11:30 a.m. on Monday.

At around 4:45 p.m. Monday, Boswell made his first appearance in Ford County District Court.

According to the complaint filed, Boswell has been charged with murder in the first degree and theft of a firearm of a value less than $25,000.

The weapon was a 9 mm handgun.

According to Ford County Attorney Kevin Salzman, murder in the first degree is an off-grid felony with a maximum sentence of life in the Department of Corrections.

The theft of firearm is a severity level 9 non-person felony with a possible sentence of 25 months in the DOC.

Boswell was appointed Steve Cott as his court appointed attorney from Magistrate Judge Rustin Martin.

Boswell’s next appearance will be a docket preliminary hearing scheduled for March 15 at 1:30 p.m. at Ford County District Court.

Boswell’s bond was set at $500,000 cash surety.
