The Dodge City Police Department is investigating a shooting incident that occurred around 10:20 a.m. on Wednesday along 6th Avenue.

According to DCPD Chief Drew Francis, officers were dispatched to the area of 6th Avenue and Soule Street, adjacent to Northwest Elementary School for a suicidal adult male subject armed with a gun sitting in his pickup truck.

"Prior to officers arriving the subject got out of his truck and into the passenger side of another vehicle," Francis said. "That vehicle was stopped on 14th Avenue just north of Highway 50 bypass by police and the subject was detained without any further incident.

"There was never a direct intentional threat to the school but we did tell them to lock down and notified the school district when the call first came in.

"We are still investigating reports of a shot being fired in the roadway at Kinkead Street and 6th Avenue by the same subject in relation to a possible ongoing domestic argument." Francis added the investigation is still ongoing and charges are pending.
