Leah Coleen Stein, daughter of Dr. Mike and Coleen Stein of Dodge City, is the recipient of the 2018 Doris Rooney Memorial STAR Scholarship sponsored by P.E.O. Chapter DZ, Dodge City.

Stein is a 2018 graduate of Dodge City High School. She plans to attend the University of Kansas where she will major in political science with a minor in Spanish.

Stein was chosen from the southwest Kansas area applicants because of her exceptional perseverance and dedication to her educational goals, which were evident in her academic achievement, community service, and extracurricular activities.

The Doris Rooney Memorial STAR Scholarship is for $1,000 and is open to any female graduating senior with at least a 3.0 grade point average from any area high school.

The scholarship was established in 2010 in memory of Doris Dockstater Rooney, a charter member of P.E.O. Chapter DZ established in 1935. Rooney was an active member up until her death in 2008.

Although the Doris Rooney Scholarship is a local scholarship, P.E.O. International also sponsors a STAR Scholarship which is a $2,500 scholarship awarded to outstanding high school senior girls.

Chapter DZ is one of the three Dodge City chapters of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, founded in 1869 by seven coeds at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant, Iowa.

P.E.O. has almost a quarter of a million members in chapters throughout the US and Canada.

Although primarily a social organization, P.E.O. promotes educational opportunities for women through six international projects that include ownership of Cottey College in Nevada, Missouri and sponsoring five different scholarships for women.
