Mayor Kent Smoll on Monday proclaimed that September will be recognized as Walk to End Alzheimer’s Month and announced that on Sept. 29 will be the Walk to End Alzheimer’s at Wright Park.

Registration is currently underway for the Alzheimer's walk and those interested can sign up at alz.org, click on events tab then the Walk to End Alzheimer's tab then search for the Dodge City event.

According to the proclamation read by Smoll, 53,000 Kansans and 5.7 million people in the U.S. are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease making someone diagnosed every 65 seconds.

Deaths from Alzheimer’s disease increased 123 percent from 2000-2015.

The local Alzheimer's Association will be hosting the Walk to End Alzheimer’s.

They also have an Alzheimer's and Related Dementias Support Group that meets at noon every third Thursday of each month. The support group meets at First United Methodist Church, 210 Soule Street and is one of the longest running support groups in the state of Kansas.

Registration for the walk begins at 9 a.m. with a ceremony taking place at 10 a.m. and the walk starting at 10:30 a.m.
