ITC Great Plains LLC celebrated the beginning of construction of its first major transmission project as a Kansas utility, the KETA high-voltage electric transmission line (also known as the Spearville-Axtell line).
ITC welcomed Gov. Mark Parkinson, utility industry officials, representatives from federal, state and local governments and community leaders to a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday at Hays. The event marked the start of work on the 225-mile, 345,000-volt transmission line from Spearville to Axtell, Neb.
“This project demonstrates the beginning of ITC’s long-term commitment to helping Kansas secure its energy future,” said Joseph L. Welch, chairman, president and CEO of ITC Holdings Corp. “As a native Kansan, I’m proud that ITC is bringing its transmission expertise and operational excellence to building this important project. This KETA project highlights the importance of a partnership approach, as it would not be possible without the support of Governor Parkinson, the Kansas Legislature, the Kansas Electric Transmission Authority and our utility partners, Sunflower Electric Power Corporation and Midwest Energy.”
Gov. Parkinson said: “We have always known that Kansas has enormous potential for wind power, but that we needed the transmission to export this renewable energy resource to the rest of the country. The KETA Line is a significant project in growing our state’s infrastructure, and I am honored to take part in this momentous groundbreaking that will help Kansas unlock its true potential in the energy economy.”
ITC’s investment in a new high-voltage infrastructure within the Southwest Power Pool region is founded upon open access to the grid and collaboration with key energy stakeholders. ITC Great Plains is collaborating with local Kansas utilities Sunflower Electric and Midwest Energy on the KETA project.
The Spearville-Axtell passes through Ford, Hodgeman, Edwards, Pawnee, Rush, Ellis, Rooks, Osborne and Smith counties. The line is being built in three phases: Spearville to the Post Rock substation (formerly Knoll) near Hays; Post Rock to the Kansas-Nebraska border; and from the Kansas-Nebraska border to Axtell.
ITC Great Plains will build the first two segments, from Spearville to the Nebraska border. The Nebraska Public Power District is responsible for building the third segment, from the Kansas-Nebraska border to Axtell, Neb., where it will interconnect with a substation owned and operated by NPPD.
