A legal battle pitting Daily Globe reporter Claire O'Brien and Ford County Attorney Terry Malone was resolved Friday when a source used in a news story revealed his identity to Malone and Dodge City police officers.
The source's action probably kept O'Brien from being found in contempt of court for the second time in a week and may have saved her from an undetermined stay in the Ford County Detention Center.
"The source coming forward at the eleventh hour was astonishing," O'Brien said. "He saved me. I was prepared to go to jail to protect his identity."
Malone declined to reveal the source's identity, saying only that he was satisfied the person was the one quoted in O'Brien's Oct. 13, 2009, Globe article about the Sam Bonilla murder case.
The source also told officials that he never gave O'Brien his real name.
