For the 10th time, the Southern Gospel Christian group Daybreak Quartet performed Monday night at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
The quartet, which was formed in 1991, returned to the city for Dodge City Days to give a benefit concert for the Presbyterian Manor of the Plains' Charitable Fund. The fund provides health care for individuals who have outlived their finances.
While singing traditional hymns and original scores, the quartet delivered a lively and energetic performance of songs such as "Somebody Loves Me," "Happiness is the Lord," "Old Rugged Cross" and "How Great Thou Art."
With Dennis Fanning singing lead, Jason Prisk as the baritone vocalist, Joel Wood as the tenor and Nathan Prisk singing bass, the group harmonized on every note. The quartet was accompanied by Jason Whittington on the piano for several songs, and the group also sang a cappella to showcase their melody.
All four men made sure audience members were involved by having them sing along to songs they knew and shout out requests such as "O, How I Love Jesus" and "Because He Lives."
Nathan delivered a powerful solo, singing, "When He was given death, I was given life." He also showcased his beatboxing talent during "Walking in the Light."
The audience stood as the quartet belted out "God Bless the U.S.A." to close the night.
The Daybreak Quartet travels from coast to coast, performing as many as 125 concerts a year. The singers' ministry-oriented performances have taken them to Australia, international barbershop quartet conventions, Atlanta Braves games and churches around the country.
"We love to sing, but we do this to spread the message of salvation," Jason Prisk said. "That's what it is all about."
