The commission also accepted Burns and McDonnell's bid to provide construction services for the project for $245,027, raising the total cost to $1.80 million.
The facility would accommodate up to four full-time firefighters to perform emergency crash and rescue operations at the airport, according to a memo from airport manager Mike Klein. The facility will not be manned at present, but staffing will depend on future needs and federal requirements.
The city is seeking a $1.71 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration for the project and is willing to supply $90,479 toward the total cost.
