The Kansas Department of Health and Enviornment announced that the blue-green algae bloom at Meade Lake is toxic.
KDHE released a press release advising the public to avoid contact with the water at Meade Lake.
- Avoid ingesting water from the lake.
- Avoid swimming or wading in the lake.
- Do not eat any shellfish or fish from the lake.
- Do not let your pets near the water.
Exposure to the water can cause illness including skin, eye, ear and throat irritation. Ingestion of aerosols from boating or other watercraft can cause diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, fever, fatigue and flu-like symptoms. Contact a doctor if you experience any of these symptoms from water at Meade Lake.
Animals are also prone to the effects, especially dogs. If a pet has contact with the water take it to a veterinarian right away.
The algae bloom will run its course and eventually die off.
