A Dodge City man will face trial on charges that he shot two men, killing one and wounding the other, on Labor Day in the Arkansas River bed.
Samuel Bonilla was bound over for prosecution Wednesday on charges of second-degree murder for the death of Dodge City resident Steven Holt, and attempted second-degree murder for the wounding of Minneola resident Tanner Brunson. He will enter a plea to the charges at his next hearing, which has not been scheduled yet.
The story began when Bonilla encountered Holt and Brunson, who had been driving in the riverbed earlier that day and were leaving the area. The encounter prompted a confrontation among the three men, with deadly results.
No one denies that Bonilla shot Holt and Brunson, based on evidence presented at Wednesday's preliminary hearing. Instead, the case will turn on another question: Was Bonilla acting in self-defense or not?
