Step by step, local officials are working on bringing a cheese-processing plant to Dodge City.
The latest piece of the puzzle fell into place Monday, when the Ford County Commission designated the Dodge City Industrial Park on the east side of town as a recovery zone. The cheese-processing plant, which would be located at the industrial park, needs the designation to qualify for federal stimulus money.
Dodge City Cheese Inc. is seeking $15 million in financing from the state, which has $30.61 million available in the form of Recovery Zone Facilities Bonds to help private businesses. If approved, the loan would be part of an $85 million package to fund construction of the plant.
Company officials are hoping to put the financing package together and close on the property by March 29, 2010, said Joann Knight, executive director of the Dodge City/Ford County Development Corp. She said the company currently holds an option on the industrial park.
