A 26-year newspaper veteran has joined the Globe staff as managing editor.
Gene Lehmann is an award-winning news writer, photographer, editorial writer, investigative reporter, columnist and features writer. He comes to Dodge City from Athens, Texas, where he served as editor of the Athens Daily Review from 1991-97 and then served as publisher of the nearby Malakoff News, a weekly newspaper located near Athens. Athens is in the pineywoods of East Texas, approximately 40 miles west of Tyler.
For the last 11 years, Lehmann has worked in the domestic garment business as an inventory control manager for Varsity Spirit Fashions, primarily a Memphis, Tenn. company with operations in Garland, Texas. Varsity Spirit Fashions is the nation's leading manufacturer of custom cheerleader and spirit -related garments for schools and colleges.
Lehmann, 53, began working in the newspaper business as a teenager. His first foray into the business was as a photographer. He shot, developed and printed photos for the Guthrie (OK) Daily Leader. He was named chief photographer for the Bartlesville (OK) Examiner-Enterprise in 1976 and began an 18-year association with the former Donrey Media Group as editor of several small newspapers primarily located in Oklahoma.
