The National Labor Relations Board says workers at the National Beef plant in Dodge City will soon be voting on whether to unionize the facility.
NLRB regional director Daniel Hubbel said Wednesday an election may be set up by late December. An exact date won't be determined until next week.
He says the unit would represent about 2,200 workers if approved.
United Food and Commercial Workers secretary-treasurer Martin Rosas says union organizers are confident they have enough votes for unionization because there is already another unionized meatpacking plant in Dodge City for comparison.
National Beef did not immediately respond to an e-mail or a phone call seeking comment.
Cargill Meat Solutions spokesman Mark Klein said the UFCW represents about 2,200 workers out of 2,700 at Cargill's Dodge City plant, but it was unclear how long the plant has been unionized.
