A majority of Dodge City Hispanic businesses report a robust shopping season this year. The economic downturn doesn't apply to Ford County, according to Cindy Malek, president of the Dodge City Area Chamber of Commerce.
“We are lucky that our local economy is insulated from the rest of the world,”she said.
Four of Dodge's Hispanic business owners reported a surge of sales since “Black Friday.” Lupita Campos, owner of Fiesta Video, sells not only DVDs, CDs and music, but also money remittance services, and prepaid and rechargeable phone cards that Hispanic people use more frequently during this season, in order to keep in touch with relatives in Mexico and Central America.
Money remittances have increased seventy-five percent this holiday season, according to Campos. She said Guatemalans and Salvadorans send more money home than other immigrants, in amounts upwards of two thousand dollars per remittance. Campos thinks that Central Americans send more money home than do Mexicans, describing them as great savers. She added that she sells about 1,500 prepaid and 500 rechargeable phone cards a week.
