Dodge City —

WICHITA  (AP) — The Kansas wheat harvest is getting nearer as the crop matures.
Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service reports that 19 percent of the wheat has now headed. But the crop is maturing slower than normal in the cool spring weather.
In its crop condition update released Monday, the agency says that the percentage of headed wheat is well behind the 61 percent average for this late in the season.
Crop condition is rated as 6 percent very poor, 13 percent poor, 37 percent fair, 35 percent good and 9 percent excellent.
The agency says about 65 percent of the corn has also been planted.
