A trip to Las Vegas, with airfare and hotel included. A three-day, two-night stay in Angel Fire, N.M. And a framed print of baseball greats Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Jimmie Fox.
Those are just a few of the items that will be auctioned off or given as prizes during Sacred Heart Cathedral School's annual fundraising auction, set for 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the Knights of Columbus, 800 W. Frontview.
The theme for this year's fundraiser is "Totally '80s," and games and music will reflect the theme. The evening will include silent and live auctions featuring a variety of prizes, including a big-screen TV, a signed K-State football and framed prints of baseball heroes.
"I think the focus is some big prizes — they're unique, not something you just go out and buy in the store," Sacred Heart Principal Chad Meitner said Monday. "Sometimes they're one-of-a-kind items, so people want to bid on them.
"And then the dance and the meal and just a chance to dress up and have almost a nostalgia feel to it. All in the name of a good cause."
The auction list includes an "itemless item," in which people may contribute to the school's current capital improvement project. This year, the school is upgrading its gym, which carried an estimated price tag of between $12,000 and $20,000.
People interested in supporting the capital improvement project may donate any amount they wish during the auction or at any other time, according to information from Sacred Heart. They do not have to attend the auction to contribute to the project.
The school has sold about 150 tickets to the auction so far, and tickets are still available at the school office for $15 apiece. Advance tickets are required.
Once expenses are paid, the school will use proceeds from the auction to buy teaching supplies, library books, religion textbooks and technological equipment.
Meitner said the fundraiser allows Sacred Heart to buy equipment it could not afford otherwise.
"As far as technology, just as one example, we would probably only be able to afford a fifth of what we currently have if it wasn't for the auction and Home and School (the Home and School Association), which is the association that puts on the auction on our behalf," he said.
Last's year's auction generated $61,247, and officials are hoping to raise around $50,000 this year.
