Cleaner, greener energy could soon help power Greensburg.
The City of Greensburg, Kansas Power Pool and John Deere Renewables jointly announce their plans to develop the Greensburg Wind Farm Wednesday.
The Greensburg Wind Farm will consist of ten 1.25 MW wind turbines.
The project will be formally announced on May 2 at the grand reopening of BTI Inc., a John Deere dealership and one of the many Greensburg businesses rebuilding from the rubble.
If development milestones are met, a groundbreaking ceremony will be announced in summer 2009.
Commercial operation could occur as early as 2010.
“The City of Greensburg is thrilled to see this project begin, as it will meet our energy goals to be 100 percent renewable,” said Steve Hewitt, Greensburg City Administrator in a statement. “This model will serve as an example of how communities can meet their sustainable goals through collaboration. Our efforts to be a green community hinge on our energy model.”
Kansas Power Pool, the municipal energy agency of which Greensburg is a member, will be purchasing the electrical output from the Greensburg Wind Farm.
“The Kansas Power Pool is excited about the opportunity to partner with the City of Greensburg and John Deere Renewables on this long-term renewable energy supply for the community and are pleased that we can play a part in helping the city achieve their green initiative,” said Colin Whitley, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager of Kansas Power Pool in the same statement.
