The blue-green algae bloom at Meade State Lake is toxic.
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment confirmed test results Friday showing the bloom's concentration exceeds recommendations from the World Health Organization for recreational water use.
The bloom can produce an unpleasant smell as the algae dies off. The toxins can make people and pets ill and may affect shellfish and fish. KDHE recommends avoiding consumption of shellfish and fish from the lake.
 Some precautions:
 • Avoid ingesting lake water.
 • Avoid swimming or wading in the water.
 • Keep pets away from the water.
