In 2007, the trauma services committee at Hays Medical Center began preliminary talks about achieving Level III Trauma Center status.
In 2010, the committee decided it was time to convert preliminary talk into an actual goal.
The committee includes various board members and, with the help of every department of the hospital, HaysMed was able to make its goal possible.
"This committee is a multi-discipline committee made up of variety of people that look into all our process in depth, how we do things and how we can do them better," Carol Groen, director of emergency and outpatient medical service, said in an interview Friday.
The trauma services committee sent in its application in April, followed by a visit from the American College of Surgeons in November.
"They toured the hospital, spent time in our ER, looked at our blood banks," Groen said. "It was a very in-depth study to make sure we met their very strict guidelines."
Last month, the staff of Hays Medical Center received news that the Verification Review Committee of the American College of Surgeons verified HaysMed as a Level III Trauma Center. They are the only Level III Trauma Center in western Kansas.
According to Groen, achieving verification as a Level III Trauma Center was truly a hospital-wide project.
"From administration to all associates of the hospital, everyone played a big role," she said.
According to a press release from HaysMed, "Level III verification by the ACS acknowledges that HaysMed has demonstrated leadership in the treatment of traumatic injuries and other complex life-threatening conditions. It underscores the dedication of the hospital to ensure faster access to advanced care and immediate intervention for life-threatening events."
The trauma service committee plans to continue its once-a-month meetings and are now working towards preparations for re-verfication in three years.
