DODGE CITY —

People at Sunflower Gardens are dreaming of apricots.
Also pears, apples and peaches. In fact, if things work out for these gardening dreamers, a whole orchard of fruit trees will blossom right here in Dodge City.
That's because the Sunflower Community Garden recently expanded, adding a second plot to its original acreage near Division and Wright. Half of Sunflower's new site, located on the campus of Dodge City Community College is designated for individual and family plots, just like the first garden site.
The land across the road from these plots looks empty. But not to this band of urban gardeners. When they look at the land, they see orchards, apple trees outlined against the blue sky, bursts of peach blossoms and branches bowing under the weight of ripened fruit.
Right now, people are just talking about the orchards. But people talking is what got the first site off the ground four years ago. And more talking, along with plenty of elbow grease and community donations, launched Sunflower's DCCC site. With a track record like that and strong community support, the day when Dodge City neighbors can harvest fruit in their own orchards might arrive sooner than you'd expect.
