Food, fun and a chance to catch up with old friends.
What better way to start celebrating Dodge City Days?
That's just what happened Thursday night, when area residents turned out for the festival's kickoff event at the Dodge House Hotel and Convention Center.
With a cash bar and a buffet-style, meat-and-potatoes meal, people were primed to kick back and have some fun. And that's what they got.
Dr. R.C. Trotter delivered a preview of the Dodge City Roundup PRCA Rodeo, the five-day show that marks the climax of Dodge City Days. He promised that this year's show would again bring a group of top performers to Roundup Arena, making it even better than last year.
The top 12 contestants in each event will compete for top prizes and championship buckles during the finals on  Aug. 2.
"It's what we call the early NFRs," Trotter said, referring to the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas. "You don't have to go to Vegas. You can come to Dodge City Roundup."
The evening included a tribute to Jeff Oliphant, a longtime member of the committee that plans the festival.
Dodge City attorney David Rebein presented Oliphant with the Rebein Bangerter Bronco Buster award, praising his efforts to promote Dodge City and help it grow.
"As I thought a little bit about the presentation tonight, I was reminded of the famous saying of Martin Luther King Jr. And that is, 'All of us can be great, because all of us can serve,'" Rebein said. "That's what this man's life has been about."
