The Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission has approved a background check for Butler National Service Corp., clearing the way for the Olathe-based company to move forward with plans for Ford County's state-owned casino.

"They're off and running," said Mike Deines, Racing and Gaming Commission spokesman.

Butler is prepared to proceed with the first phase of its casino complex and expects to break ground at the site by the end of December, Boot Hill Gaming President Jeff Thorpe said in an e-mail to the Daily Globe.

"The Dodge Commission approved the final plat of Mariah Center last Monday, and Butler is ready to issue its first bid package for ground disturbance immediately," he said. "It is still expected that the interim phase of the facility will be completed and opened within 12 months."

Butler has proposed building an $87.5 million complex, which would include a hotel and other amenities, on the western outskirts of Dodge City near U.S. Highway 50.

The Kansas Lottery Gaming Facility Review Board selected Butler as the casino developer in September, but the state's contract with the company was not binding until after the Racing and Gaming Commission approved the background check.
