Once you've established a town, it's almost impossible to move it, so the selection of a town site deserves a lot of thought.
The site for Dodge City was determined by the boundaries of Fort Dodge and proximity to the Arkansas River and the Santa Fe Trail.
Once the Santa Fe Trail established a travel route for goods and pioneers, the railroads and highways that were built followed the trail for long parts of their westward journey.
Dodge City's connection to the Santa Fe Trail helped ensure the town's growth and survival.
