The founder of Ignatius Press and its current editor-in-chief, Jesuit Father Joseph Fessio, will speak about the new missal translations, as well as the value of online education at the 12th Annual Midwest Catholic Family, scheduled for August 5-7, at the Century II Convention Center in Wichita.
Father Fessio, a close friend and former student of Pope Benedict XVI, runs one of the largest Catholic publishing companies in the United States in Ignatius Press, the primary U.S. publisher of the Holy Father’s works, having issued more than 40 books.
“Ignatius Press has published the works of Pope Benedict XVI for over 20 years,” Father Fessio said.
Pope Benedict XVI was Father Fessio’s doctoral director and mentor at the University of Regensburg from 1972 - 1975 in the former West Germany. Father Fessio is also close to a number of the cardinals who elected the new pope in 2005. He continues to make an annual trip to Rome for papal meetings.
Father Fessio will speak about the changes to the Roman Missal: Third Edition, which dioceses in the U.S. will implement on November 27, the First Sunday of Advent. He noted there are very few changes and the faithful will not notice a large difference in the prayers and instructions for the celebration of the Mass.
“The changes that will be noticed are a great improvement over the current form,” he said. “There has been a great deal of preparation for these changes, and the implementation should be seamless.”
A new approach
In his second presentation, Father Fessio will share what he calls a new approach to undergraduate Catholic education. In his role on the faculty and staff of The College of Saint Thomas More, he is playing an integral part in what he calls a new and exciting adventure in Catholic education, St. Thomas More Online, which will allow students to complete the College of St. Thomas More Bachelor of Arts degree entirely online and for about a quarter of the cost of attending a brick and mortar school.
“The goal of the project is to provide a good, solid, Catholic foundation for students, especially the first year, because it is the most important in forming the Catholic identity in terms of the courses taken,” Father Fessio said. “Hopefully, the program will grow and thrive, proving you don’t need a building to go to school and to receive a college campus experience.”
