When Dodge City's special events center opens in 2011, Ford County officials want to make sure the city's and county's financial interests are protected.
Dodge City already does the accounting for the "Why Not Dodge?" projects, including Dodge City Raceway Park. But Ford County Administrator Ed Elam is concerned that the special events center — which will require accounting for ticket sales, catering and other aspects of the operation — will create an additional burden for city staff.
"As these projects get larger and more complicated, I'm not sure that the checks and balances might be there that the county commission would be wanting as far as funding and expenditures," he told the Ford County Commission on Monday.
The commissioners pondered the issue during a work session but did not take action, although they did talk about sitting down with city officials to discuss it. They also kicked around some possible alternatives, such as hiring a controller to handle accounting for the "Why Not Dodge?" projects.
