Wild West Country is a group that promotes tourism in the southwest Kansas region, and includes members from 22 counties who work together to encourage tourism in the area.
"The goal of Wild West Country is to work collaboratively to enhance tourism in southwest Kansas," said treasurer Christy Hopkins.
Applications for membership for 2012 are being accepted until March 31. According to a recent press release, there are many benefits to becoming a member of Wild West Country, including information sharing, newsletters, networking, tourism leads, Kansas Sampler representation, a presence on the web site, educational opportunities and much more.
"We encourage anyone who is interested in promoting tourism in southwest Kansas to join this group," said Lea Ann Seiler, president of Wild West Country. "Southwest Kansas has a lot to share, and by working together we can all be more successful."
In addition to the application, there is also a yearly fee of $25 per individual or $50 per organization to be a member of the group. They meet every other month in one of the 22 member communities.
The next meeting is scheduled for Feb. 23 at the Finnup Building in Garden City. During the meeting, the New Boston creative group will present findings from a recent study they conducted about how Wild West Country can improve, as well as how to continue to increase tourism in the area. The study is funded by a grant from the Mariah Fund that will go towards improving Wild West Country and the work that they do, according to Seiler.
"We hope that many individuals and organizations see the importance of this group and decide to join," said Hopkins. "It is a wonderful opportunity to grow tourism as an area, and not have all 22 counties competing against each other for separate tourism."
Members of Wild West Country are diverse and include individuals, attractions, museums, restaurants, lodging properties, local businesses and many more.
"This is a really beneficial group for anyone who wants to increase tourism in southwest Kansas," said Hopkins. "We have so much to offer here, and by working together it will help to bring more tourists to all areas of southwest Kansas."
