In a letter to supporters Tuesday, U.S. Rep. Todd Tiahrt took issue with his GOP Senate opponent U.S. Rep. Jerry Moran's stand on taxes.
In the letter, Tiahrt said that throughout his legislative career "I have never voted for a tax increase. Never, not a single time. And you have my word that I will continue to oppose tax increases and support tax cuts in the U.S. Senate."
He went on to claim that Moran's record on raising taxes is "astounding" going on to say that Moran have voted 'no' less than 12 times to raise taxes.
"He was even one of only 12 other Republicans to oppose President Bush's 2003 tax cuts. This bill cut taxes across the board, expanded the 2001 tax cuts and even increased the child tax credits."
Tiahrt even went so far as to claim that, while in the Kansas Legislature, Moran voted numerous times to raise taxes, saying that Moran even sponsored legislation to raise income taxes in Kansas by "roughly $86 million" and sales taxes by "$51 million."
Moran for Kansas Communications Director Dan Conston was quick to defend Moran saying:
"It figures only a true creature of Washington like Todd Tiahrt would send a fundraising pitch with typical Washington speak: Creating his own "facts." Not only did Jerry vote for the 2003 Bush Tax cuts and countless other efforts to lower taxes by billions of dollars, but Tiahrt's desperate pitch failed to point out that literally just weeks ago, Todd supported a tax increase on every airline passenger in America - one of Tiahrt's numerous votes against low taxes.
The reality is Jerry Moran has marked his career by fighting for lower taxes, lower spending, lower deficits, against the growth of government, and for earmark reform that Todd Tiahrt opposed - even when it wasn't politically popular. Todd Tiahrt went to Washington and has made a career out of supporting wasteful earmarks, controversial spending and becoming part of Washington's culture of spending and corruption."
Here's what I located:
• 2003 Bush Tax Cut Vote: Jobs and Growth Reconciliation Tax Act, H.R. 2, 05/09/2003, Roll Call 182
• 2010 FAA Vote: FAA Air Transportation Modernization and Safety Improvement Act, H.R. 1586, 03/25/2010, Roll Call 190
