Thunderbird Coach Lee LaMunyon was excited for his team after they held on for a 14-7 win over a scrappy Maize South team Friday night in Towanda.

"We have 15 seniors who have worked really hard to get to this point," LaMunyon said. "We are doing the little things that help win games. I was really proud of them tonight."

LaMunyon couldn't have liked the offensive output in the first half. Circle didn't get a first down until only seconds remained before halftime. But despite the lack of offense, the Thuderbirds scored when D-1 prospect Jordan Phillips blocked a punt and Alex Gardinier scooped it up and rushed 52 yards for a touchdown.

Phillips also hit the Maverick quarterback to force an interception by Kristian Farner.

The second half opened with a botched onside kick attempt by MSHS. Circle made them pay with a 44 yards drive.

Facing a 4th down situation from the 10, Gardinier hit John Nicholas over the middle for a touchdown. Brett Tunnell knocked through the extra point for a 14-7 lead.

Maize South threatened late driving from their own 3 inside CHS territory. But Phillips drove the center back into the quarterback for a sack to end the drive. On the Mavericks' last attempt Jim Hill and Dylan Bilson each recorded a sack to stop the final MSHS drive.
