Evelyn P. Etling, 94, died May 7, 2008, in Adams, Neb.
She was born Sept. 24, 1913, in Gray County, near Ensign, the daughter of Clarence and Fern Sayre. In 1934 Evelyn married Calvin Etling.
She was Gray County Wheat Queen in 1930 and valedictorian of the Ensign High School Class of 1931.
They farmed in Gray County until his death in 1973. She was active in the Ensign United Methodist Church, the Dodge City United Methodist Church, and Cooperative Extension homemaker groups. She was 4-H demonstration leader for the Ensign Boosters 4-H Club. She enjoyed flower gardening all her life. After Calvin's death she took up china painting exhibiting her art in Kansas and Colorado. She never lost her eye for color, her appreciation of flowers, her focus on family, or her sense of kindness and consideration for others.
Survivors include her son, Arlen, and his wife Lana, Lincoln, Neb.; two grandchildren; sister-in-laws, Joan Sayre, Dodge City; and Beverly Sayre, Lawrence; and their families.
The Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Swaim Funeral Home with Rev. Dick Robbins presiding. Burial will follow at Ensign Cemetery in Ensign.
Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Swaim Funeral Home.
