Ruth Hessman, 83, died Sunday, November 8, 2009, at Western Plains Medical Complex, Dodge City.
She was born December 7, 1925, at Altus, Arkansas, the daughter of Clarence Morris and Lillian Graeter Leveritt. She and her husband operated a grocery store in Paige, Texas, before moving to Dodge City in June 1967. She worked for Eckles Department Store, Midwest Hearing and was a secretary for the Southwest Kansas Library System, all in Dodge City, and was a Claims Assessor for Cimarron Insurance, Cimarron. She was also an accomplished artist.
She was a member of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Altar Society, Daughters of Isabella, a Dominican Sister Associate and a member of the Democratic Party. She and her husband established the Southwest Chapter of Parents of Murdered Children, and she was an advocate of Victims Rights in Topeka.
On November 17, 1956, she married Robert “Bob” Hessman at Giddings, Texas. He survives.
Other survivors include: a son, Robert Benjamin Hessman and wife, Janine, Wichita; four daughters, Dava Crussell and husband, Thomas, Penrose, Colorado, Jude Hessman and companion, Brian T. Johnson, Gemma Mills and husband, Joe, and Frances Waldren and husband, Randy, all of Dodge City; 17 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter Mary Mel Eesa Rains; her son, Rinehold “Ron” Hessman; and a stepbrother, Clarence Leveritt.
Daughters of Isabella Rosary will be at 4:00 p.m. Thursday, November 12, 2009. at Burkhart-Ziegler Funeral Chapel, Dodge City. Vigil Service will be 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m. Friday at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Dodge City, with Fr. Ted A. Skalsky presiding. Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Thursday at Burkhart-Ziegler Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Dodge City.
