DODGE CITY —

“Free” is a well-known and beloved universal word. Samples are also favorites. But there are some free rides we don't even think of in this busy world.
Dry weather is good for hair, while humidity is a natural beautifier for the skin. If you add flavor to your ice cubes, you get a delicious drink. Sugar or sugar-free sweetener and lemon added to ice cubes will upgrade an iced tea. A bit of Kool-aid on ice cubes makes them delicious. We appreciate small effective things, don't we?
Country wildflowers can make an original bouquet, and winter treetops are made of brown lace, a fascinating free sight. With two slices of tomatoes and two of bread, you have a sandwich. Wearing an old hat protects your skin as well as a new one, and a pair of old shoes is free of charge but delightful to wear. An old coat insulates you from the cold as much as the newest fashion.
My mother-in-law used to say, “Uncomfortable shoes reflect on your face.” However. most of the time, young women wear uncomfortable shoes. I remember when I started wearing high heels, the more fashionable they were, the more unbearable. And I loved to dance and loved my sandals.
Everyone has a lot of forgotten things at home, and no garage sales have been good enough to get rid of them. Well, why don't you wear, use or replay them? They’re free, and they are yours: a throw carpet, table placemats and napkins, a lamp, DVDs and CDs, books you read and enjoyed many years ago, extra coffee mugs and clothes you have been saving until fashions come back, like in a carousel.
If you feel like seeing a movie, go to the public library. You may end up with a couple of good films and books at no charge.
The air you breathe, rain for your lawn and other botanical features, meteorological up-to-date news, advice and cancellations are also free and welcome.
If you haven't seen our wheat harvest, cutting and handling, you need a friend. My husband and I were invited to a real experience of cutting wheat in a combine. It really surprised us that the cabin was air-conditioned and had a huge "windshield" that worked as a window to a fantastic and real — at the same time — show. It was unforgettable and free.
Neighboring states offer many colors of flowers in their fields, but we offer sunflowers. Autumn leaves changing their colors and shades can be fabulous. For Californians, visiting vineyards and wine tasting are free. In the coastal states, the ocean in green and blue shades  — including its smell, sound and breeze — come in a gift-wrapped package for free. The wonders of the world, even if they are more than the seven or eight that we all have heard about, don't cost anything on TV.
Travel by way of television. Where else can you travel free of charge without even getting tired? This way, not only may we visit the greatest places, but if they are taped, you may visit them for nothing again and again.
Your mail, the telephone book, a calendar, a smell of perfume, the song of a bird, the laughter of a baby, the moon, the stars, a smiling face, window shopping ...
Let's stop right here, as we are getting into deep waters.
