Sen. Derek Schmidt has credentials for the office of attorney general of the state of Kansas few can match. As majority leader of the Senate and vice chair of both the Taxation and Judiciary Committees, he has logged countless hours of familiarity with the laws of the state of Kansas and has frequently been called upon to speak to the legislation that established the very laws the attorney general is required to enforce.
Sen. Schmidt has the experience of the courtroom as a practicing attorney and experience in a variety of capacities calling upon his knowledge of the law. He has the experience to supervise other attorneys as they carry out the functions of the practice of law. His demeanor and ability to work with people in all capacities, opinions and philosophies is well known in the Legislature. He is articulate and can argue his positions with class and style that resonate in his radio-quality voice. He is a people-oriented person who not only can articulate his positions but also listens to the opinions of others with the same intense interest and attention.
As a senator from Johnson County and chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, I have worked with Sen. Schmidt to resolve a variety of issues. We have agreed on some and disagreed on some, but always in a professional way, maintaining a good personal relationship. He represents a rural part of the state, while Johnson County is more of an urban/suburban part of the state, but we found areas upon which we could agree for the best interests of Kansas as a whole.
Derek Schmidt will bring fairness and equity to the office of attorney general, knowledge of the law and experience unmatched to create a functional and efficient office. I am pleased to support his candidacy for the office of attorney general.
